Cursed Pirate Girl by Jeremy Bastian

Wow...just Wow This is an amazing book that appeared on comic shop shelves this week and it's like a DIY comic from a brilliant friend living in the 19th century. The silver inked logo and… Continue

Top comic book runs (#5-#1)

5. Usagi Yojimbo – Stan Sakai Like Jeff Smith, Wendy & Richard Pini, and Dave Sim, Stan Sakai made comics his way, telling stories about feudal Japan through the eyes of a ronin rabbit. And while it could have lent itself to parody, and make no mistake, parts of Usagi are hilarious, Sakai made us believe in an ancient time populated by animal-people and taught us Japanese history… Continue

Top ten comic book runs (#10-#6)

10) Alpha Flight – John Byrne During my golden years of reading comics, this was THE one. I had just missed the Claremont/Byrne years of Uncanny X-Men, but I made sure I got to the drug store every month to pick up the new issue of Alpha Flight. They were an unusual team, echoing the Defenders, in that they didn’t seem to like hanging out with each other…at all. But the… Continue

Wolverine - Prodigal Son review

For some reason, I'm getting more and more into manga lately. Kenshin Rurouni, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, Mail, 20th Century Boys...I'm finding the tricks and story techniques different from the big two and it's been a lot of fun. Anyway, Antony Johnston (a British writer who has done work I've liked at Oni) and Filipino artist Wilson Tortosa are the team behind thi… Continue

The new animated Wonder Woman film on DVD is actually pretty great.

wonder woman? Pictures, Images and Photos' />

I've seen most of the Marvel and DC animated, made-for-DVD, films and this one, much to my surprise, is THE best one of the bunch. Gail Simone helped write it and a lot of the humor she brings to her comic writing i… Continue

Australia (2008)

I love Howard Hawks' films...Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are amazing pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the new Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking...man, Baz must really love Hawks' movies, too. As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they're… Continue

Good readin' at the shop tomorrow!

I'll be picking up these comics: The Age of the Sentry (Jeff Parker is a sleeper joy-of-a-writer) All-Star Superman (man, I can't believe it's over) Amazing Spider-Man (they really want us to believe that Menace is a certain person...but we just might have the gender wrong) Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! (best DC kids title coming out currently) Captain Britain and MI:13 (Blade is b… Continue

Amazing Spider-Man BND Extra! review by Doc Beechler

Picked up and really enjoyed the BND - Extra! last week. It has three stories by many of the writers and artists already involved in BND. (more Marcos Martin!) The first is a look back at the early years of gangster baddie, Hammerhead. He's quite the crime film snob, did you know that...and Russian. Well...the last time we saw him, during Civil War, he was trying to muscle in on the K… Continue

A View From My Local Comics Shop: Best of 2009 and More

In the spirit of Newsarama’s own Readers’ Favorites of 2009 Tourney, I thought I’d get a view from my local comics shop and see what my friend in comics, Chris Ureta Casos, the long-time buyer for Comics Dungeon, here in Seattle, had to say about comics in 2009 and much more. Blog@Newsarama: Chris, with Newsarama’s Readers’ [...]

“Spider-Man spins web at Gov Isle”: The New York Post’s Rich Calder has a short blog article about the real-world setting of Spider-Man’s most recent adventure, and talks to writer Fred Van Lente about the two-part “Keemia’s Castle” story in Amazing Spider-Man #615 and #616. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer two issues of [...]

Comics Grinder: Fall Out Toy Works

We have an appropriate comic to consider this holiday season, a story involving a toy maker. But this story is not as sweet as it may seem, as often is the case with the good stuff. Fall Out Toy Works is an unusual comic. If you follow Comics Grinder, you know I’m a huge fan of [...]
