Doctor Who - The Doctor's Daughter (spoilers)

I really enjoy listening to the BBC podcast commentaries for the episodes as they are different from the ones used on the DVDs. For "The Doctor's Daughter", David Tennant, Russell T. Davies, and Alice Troughton (who is one of only two people who have directed Doctor Who, Torchwood, AND Sarah Jane episodes) give a lot of good background info.

Tennant asked Davies for the reason why the Tardis didn't translate the Hath's language… Continue

Amazing Spider-Man: Brand New Day

I have completely drank that Kool-Aid at this point as I bought the first Brand New Day hardcover yesterday. Beyond having the first two arcs and the FCBD story in it, there were a couple of pleasant surprises.

First, Dan Slott's very first published Spidey story is in the book. It's a backup tale from a mid-90s Venom Special that shows one of the nights where the suit put itself on Pete while he was sleeping and went patrolling… Continue

The Orphanage (Spanish language gothic horror film)

Holly and I watched this last night and I wanted to give it a blog piece to be a booster for it. Not many movies affect the dreams I have the night after watching them, but this one sure did. I don't want to give ANY spoilers as that is a good deal of the fun and terror of the film, but this debut film by director Juan Bayona certainly puts him on my map of promising film-makers. The script was by Sergio Sanchez and the film was… Continue

I will only list them once the first time they appear then they will be listed under reorders if I have to get them again. Big item this week is the first series of Heroes… Continue

Attention Gene Colan fans: Important information

You may have heard by now that Gene is not in the best of health. To be blunt: his kidneys are failing and he and his wife do not have medical insurance. I'm a member of Gene's Yahoo! group and this news has hit us all very hard. If you like Gene's work or just want to know more please head over to: thecliffordmethod.blogspot.com. Cliff Meth is leading a charge to not only get an auction going for Gene but he's trying to get Marvel to kick in a buck of three. Mark Evanier is also keeping folks… Continue

Essential Wolverine vol. 1 (part 3) - Logan and feminist theory

So, I'm reading through the next three issues (#4-#6) and I'm impressed that Claremont keeps throwing characters into the Mandripoor mix and is somehow doing a great job of giving everyone time to introduce themselves, allow each some characters moments, and continues to move plot along. We keep everyone from the first arc...Lindsay McCabe and Jessica Drew are still in town...the chief of police gets more of an introduction (even using the "usual… Continue

Essential Wolverine vol. 1 (part 2)

I'll admit that by 1988, when Wolverine #1 hit the stands, I was getting a bit tired of the mainstream superhero stuff. After Dark Knight and Watchmen hit in 1986 and cool stuff like Swamp Thing, Zot!, Beanworld and other very different works were hitting the comic shops, reading a book about one of the merry mutants seemed a step back. Peter David's Hulk and James Robinson's Starman were enough superheroics in the 90s for me. I have… Continue

Essential Wolverine vol. 1

As many of us know...Wolverine was introduced back in Incredible Hulk #180 and #181 (1974) with Len Wein, Herb Trimpe and John Romita Sr as the creators usually given credit for his birth. Beyond being a living weapon for the Canadian government with claws...little was revealed about him during that first appearance. Most readers thought that the claws were just part of his gloves. When the international, all-new X-Men hit the scene in 1975,… Continue
