DC NEW FRONTIER ANIMATED MOVIE review

Just finished watching the new direct to DVD animated movie. First off, I have not read the entire original story so my review will be through the eyes of a newbie not on whether its a good adaptation of the comics.

SPOILERS....

I liked this movie a lot. The animation is perfect and just highlights how much Darwyn Cooke's art style supports the translation. I wish the introduction to the characters and situations was a little more clearly defined. I… Continue

Doctor Who #1 from IDW

Well, I thought the first issue was quite a bit of fun. It seems that, during a search through time and space to find the perfect chocolate milkshake, the Doctor and Martha cross paths with one of the newer villainous aliens...one Rose encountered, but Martha hasn't. Craziness ensues. The addition of a lot of humor was welcome and, given that it's Tennant's Doctor, necessary.

Four Tardises (Tardi ?) out of five.

Bonus Doctor… Continue

The Incredible Hulk #334

In the 1970s, writers like Denny O’Neil and Steve Gerber brought social ills to the forefront in superhero comics using gritty realism and satire. In the 80s, Alan Moore and Frank Miller dropped the other big maturity shoe for comics by giving characters complex psychological issues.

Without these important phases of development, Peter David’s Hulk run probably wouldn’t have been possible or, at least, would have looked very different.… Continue

Looking for a car

Well, after a nice run of 220K miles, the old Volvo finally gave out. Actually, I neglected to replace the timing belt at 210K(sorry betsy) and heard the gut wrenching sound of *snap* followed by the clicking of cylinders all out of sync. Anyway, i need to buy a different car. Looking for a 4 door sedan that can fit 2 child seats and a 10yo in back. 25mpg or so(or better) and service records that show me it has been maintained. Something in the 8-10K range would be good. Camry, Accord, 626,… Continue

The Incredible Hulk #333

It’s the face that launched a thousand…well…dozens and dozens of comic purchases. Issue #333 was the one that started me buying the longest run of comics I ever have. I tend to be pretty fickle and my attention span isn’t overly long for any title or character. If two or so issues are lackluster, I’m gone. Peter David and the Hulk kept me for their entire run. It helped that the Hulk changed focus and personalities frequently during the years and… Continue

Essential Incredible Hulk vol. 1

I'll start by saying that I had a really great time reading these stories from the Incredible Hulk and Tales to Astonish. I had no idea that Bruce Banner had pretty much continuously exposed himself to gamma rays over those first few years. Some folks have complained that the Hulk seemed to change with every issue, how he transformed (the moon, gamma exposure, getting upset or anxious not only changing him into the Hulk but back to Banner, etc),… Continue

Doctor Who series 4 and Sarah Jane Adventures start in April

The SciFi network will start showing both in April. Woo-Hoo!

These last few years of Doctor Who shows (Torchwood, Sarah Jane) under the guidence of Russell T. Davies have been a very big treat. If you like them, I would also suggest his other works...Casanova (with David Tennant), Bob & Rose, and The Second Coming (with Christopher Eccleston). All can be found at Amazon or on Netflix and are fantastic.

Thanks to my very… Continue

Mike reviews Jumper (the prequel GN)

Jumper Jumpscars GN

Written: Nunzio Defilippis & Christina Weir

Drawn: Brian Hurtt

Planning on seeing movie -- B+

Not going to set movie -- C-

This review is being written before I have seen the movie. It will be interesting to look back afterwards and see if my thoughts change. From the trailers it seems that the Jumper (Hayden Christensen) is the protagonist. The questions are.. is he good or bad? and who is… Continue

What is keeping comics from going stale (Storyline?) And does recycling online make you feel purpose less?

We all read comics, but is dan dido yet another dude turning a single plotline into a trilogy at the last minute to milk it? Will Final Crisis fix the major continuity problems? Is Civil War not the best piece of allegorical fiction ever produced about the patriot act? (Coming from a DC fan) Is Marvel taking the Lead in boldness because they have always had the best art and now possibly one of the best plot threads (because it actually matters, instead of acting as a reset gimmick). Please no… Continue

RAMBO rules!

I am definitely a fan of the first 3 Rambo movies. While First Blood was a very small movie that snuck a vietnam message into a nice vengeance flick, parts II and III can be ranked right on top of the jingoistic movie scale. Both movies did have a message, missing MIA's in vietnam and the Soviet occupation of Afganistan but obviously had no basis in any violent warfare reality. The ending of Rambo III was particularly disappointing as helicopter vs… Continue
