Downtown Comics

The source for comics and pop culture in Indianapolis since 1993

Well, when I saw regualr Batman & Batman RIP artist Tony Daniel would be WRITING and pencilling Battle for the Cowl, I had my doubts. An artist, who's written work (if any exists), i'd never read, was taking the helm of a project so close to the history of my favorite characters, I had my doubts for sure.

Then I cracked open Issue #1 and I was calmed. The first issue wasn'ty anything amazing, but a great starting point. Black Mask returns and destroys Arkham Asylum, WONDERFUL! A new Batman, presumably Jason Todd, is masquerading as Batman and killing criminals and anyone in his path. WONDERFUL TIMES TWO! Tim Drake donning the Cowl of the 90's (Jim Aparo, blue-circle era costume), because Dick Grayson refuses to? Another great moment for me.

Now, when we get to issue #2 of Battle for The Cowl, I was excited. The middle, where the action really usually begins to pick up. and it sure the hell did, with a bang!

If you haven't read it yet, AVOID THE NEXT PARAGRAPH! SPOILERS BELOW!

Now, with the apparent happenings to Tim Drake on the final page of Issue #2, i was floored, shocked, flabbergasted! Jason Todd, in his obsessive quest to become Batman, does the unthinkable and impales his replacement as Robin, TIM DRAKE! All at the same time Dick Grayson finally appears to be coming to terms with his destiny and Black Mash is blowing up Gotham City!

A hell of a setup for Issue #3, to say the least. What happened to Tim Drake simply shocked me and i've now began to think the "shoot-em-up" Batman, may not be Jason Todd. I don't really know if he would take it that far, to kill Tim Drake.

So i've been thinking, if he's NOT Jason Todd (as he never says he is), who's your pick for who he may be? I believe it MOST LIKELY is Jason Todd, but what a twist it'd be if it turned out to not be hime. My first guess would be Hush, he's the only other person who knew the identitys of the Robins (I think) and enough history about Bruce and his family to act as if he is Jason Todd.

I'd prefer it to be Jason Todd, but I have a strong feeling it could be Hush or another person. I don't want to know, im just guessing. I hate to know endings before I actually read the comic.

Well, I hope I got some people talking!

Below are pictues for Battle for The Cowl, Batman & Robin, and Gotham City Sirens.
